If your life were to be made into a movie, would you be the main character? Or would you be the sidekick?
I heard a conversation on a podcast recently. The woman was telling a story about how she has taken up running, I mean, really long distance kind of stuff. She’s in her early forties and had started running during the pandemic as a way to socialise and get out of the house. Now she’s running ultra marathons and doing well in them too!
She started the story by talking about the fact that she’s always been a great sidekick and never felt like the main character in her own life. I’ll paraphrase here, but she goes on to say that, she’s such and such’s ”mum” or she’s known as her husbands ”wife”. She’s also had a successful career but has always been in a sidekick kind of role. She sits on numerous boards but in a way is the shoulder to lean on for the founders that are going out and achieving their dreams.
What was she doing, where were her dreams?
Running has motivated her to go out and challenge herself in a way that she never thought possible. She entered her first half marathon and won it, she broke the ribbon, she came first! And as she crossed the line her children were right there to cheer her on, wow.
Running gave her a sense of purpose and has challenged her to prove to herself that she isn’t just the sidekick and can play the main character in her own life. Soon she’s going to be running some crazy distance like 250miles over five days. Just, incredible.
The story stayed with me, I think this is because it reminded me of my own life and how it’s turned out. I’m also a runner and am addicted to the pursuit, blisters and all! That’s probably why I was inspired by her story and I think there’s something for everyone to take away from it.
Of course, becoming the main character will mean different things to different people but the general idea is an important one.
Take the leap, become the star in your own story. I’m interested, what main character will you play?
