Jerry Seinfeld once said, and l quote ”It’s a blessing in life to find the torture you’re comfortable with.”
For him this is writing. Spending hours on hours, days on days, writing, thinking, and discovering. Doing the hard ”thing”.
If it was easy we would all be doing it.
My torture would have to be writing and running. Both of these l find extremely rewarding and at the same time very challenging.
I haven’t always been a runner and I definitely haven’t always been a writer. (Can l call myself a writer?)
l barely passed grade 10 English and this probably shows in my writing, but l don’t care because l’m in it for the grind, the self discovery. Doing the torture l never thought l could endure. Taking myself out of the comfortable and into the uncomfortable.
I love the feeling of completing a new post or finishing my weekly long run. A sense of personal achievement, a wave of happiness. It’s incredible.
I have had running as my comfortable torture for many years now.
However, writing is something l have only just started this year. Writing gives me this kind of internal friction that l need to overcome and l oil the friction of scattered thoughts into a narrative on these pages.
Jerry is right, find your torture. It is a blessing in life you never knew you needed.
Start looking cause we all need a little difficult and you never know where you might find yours.
