Anything Or Everything?

I was listening to a podcast recently and there was a question asked. How do you choose and what weight do you put on the different wants in life?

The quote that was used for this question was,

You can have anything you want in this life but you can’t have everything, you decide.

The hosts of the podcast then went on to share some of their stories and trade offs they and their families have made.

I thought this was a really good question and it got me thinking about my own situation and how financial independence ties into this very simple but powerful quote.

Nothing in this life is free and there are trade offs to be made and it’s up to the individual to put them in the order of value. This is exactly what “FI” is, choosing your own path that enables you to live the most fulfilling life possible. The quote above explains this perfectly; cutting back in areas of your life that don’t move the needle on the happiness dial and spending and adding value to the areas that do.

An example of this in my life is that we have a chef where l work and l can use this service for a fee everyday. However l choose not too because l’m more than happy taking my own lunch or leftovers from the night before. Also my partner’s cooking is amazing! This not only saves money but it doesn’t effect my overall happiness level.

There are many more examples of this throughout my day to day life. I try my best to be economical and efficient where l can, which frees up money to spend in the areas that bring me the most joy, like buying running shoes, books, and spending on holidays.

We all have differing needs and wants and finding what works for you is a great place to start.

Don’t be afraid to march to your own drum, you might just like the music…
