Below is a list of a few books and blogs I’ve found enjoyable over the years. I can’t list them all, of course, but this will get you started. Enjoy!

Finance

The Simple Path To Wealth – JL Collins. I loved the message and ideas in this book. JL explains things in an easy to understand way and his writing style is a pleasure to read. He also has a blog jlcollins.nh.com which the book was derived from using his stock series.

Motivated Money – Peter Thornhill. Peter has been around a while now but his book and writing still holds up well. A must read for any Australian looking to learn about the market.

The Psychology Of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed and happiness – Morgan Housel. Excellent. A short book written in a unique way that is filled with stories that helps engage the reader in a way that isn’t common in financial writing. He also writes regularly on the Collaborative funds blog.

Strong Money Australia: How to gain financial independence and create a life of freedom – Dave Gow. This guy retired at the age of 28! He is a great writer and is one of the first to push the FIRE movement in Australia.

The Richest Man In Babylon – George S. Clason. This book changed my life and lead me down the financial path l’m on now.

Enough. True measures of money, business and life – John C. Bogle. Fantastic, John is the founder of Vanguard and has done a lot for the individual investor over the last 50 plus years.

The Little Book Of Common Sense Investing – John C. Bogle. Another fantastic short read from Mr Bogle.

Richer, Wiser, Happier: How the world’s greatest investors win in markets and life – William Green. This book offers a unique insight into many investors from around the world.

One Up On Wall Street – Peter Lynch. This book is a classic in the investing space. Peter’s lessons and wisdom still ring true to this day. His advice to the everyday person is to invest in the company’s that they use and love and that this strategy can give us an edge over the professionals.

Biographies

Shoe Dog: A memoir by the creator of Nike – Phil Knight. I loved reading this wonderful story, full of all the things life throws at you wrapped up in beautifully written memoir. It makes me want to run even more!

The snowball: Warren Buffet and the business of life – Alice Schroeder. The story is incredible from a young boy buying his first stock to becoming one of the wealthiest people on earth.

James Dyson, Invention: A life – James Dyson. A truly wonderful book. He is passionate about engineering and inventing things that help others and humanity. It really was an eye opener on what Dyson the company is about and the efforts it puts into invention and design.

The Choice: Edith Edgar. This book is a gift to humanity. One of those rare and eternal stories that you don’t want to end and that leaves you forever changed. Her life reveals our capacity to transcend even the greatest of horrors.

When breath becomes air: What makes life worth living in the face of death? – Paul Kalanithi. A very powerful book. It will bring out all the emotions and is well worth the read.

Made in America: Sam Walton with John Huey. This is a fantastic book written in the last years of Sam’s life. An amazing account of one of histories great retailers. The curiosity and drive this man had was incredible.

A Man for All Markets: Edward O. Thorp. Ed is a fascinating character and his life should be the blueprint for most of us. Not too greedy whilst living a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

The Everything Store: Brad Stone. Brad tells the full history and story of Amazon. This is an excellent business book.

Einstein: Walter Isaacson. The biography of Einstein. One of the greatest thinkers of human history. Well worth the read.

On Writing, A Memoir Of The Craft – Stephen King. Part biography and part advice for creative writing. Stephen is one of the most successful writers of our time and his ability comes to life throughout the book. It is truely wonderful. ”Writing is magic, as much the water of life as any other creative art. The water is free, so drink.”

Creativity, Inc. – Ed Catmull. Ed was the president of Pixar Animation and Disney Animation. His ideas on managing creatives and getting people to work together in a way that fosters new ideas and ways of thinking are excellent. I would recommend this book to anyone who manages people.

Man’s Search For Meaning – Viktor E. Frankl. This is a classic and should be a must read for anyone trying to find purpose and meaning to their life.

Fiction

Catch 22 – Joseph Heller. Set in world war II, this is a story of a bombardier named Yossarian. If Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from flying the perilous missions then he is caught in Catch-22: if he flies he is crazy, and doesn’t have to; but if he doesn’t want to fly he must be sane, and then has to. That’s some catch…

All the light we cannot see – Anthony Doerr. This is a war Novel based in the setting of world war II. Incredible story that takes the reader on a journey to remember.
